RECOGNIZING COMMUNITY CARE WORKERS

Home care workers are in the spotlight this week. The Canadian Association of Community Care has named it "Community Workers Recognition Week."

Lucille Dalrymple, a home health aide in Regina, says the recognition is appreciated as their work often goes unnoticed.

"As a result of our work, many more people are able to live longer in their own homes," she explains. "We provide respite care, assist with baths, personal grooming and meals, housecleaning and many other services for seniors and other people with special needs living at home."

The work of Lucille and thousands of other home care workers is an important part of health care delivery in Saskatchewan. "Without our program, many people would be forced to go into long term care facilities - they just wouldn't be able to manage on their own," she says.

Home care workers also contribute to the quality of life of many clients. "Because we work so closely with residents in their homes, we quickly become part of the household. We know their neighbours, their grandchildren."

Lucille loves working in community health. It's easy to see why.
